Durable, low-maintenance, and inexpensive, there’s a reason why concrete is a homeowner’s go-to material when it comes to basement floors, patios, and driveways.

Of course, that doesn’t mean concrete doesn’t stain and to avoid it from getting any bigger, it does need a good washing and cleaning now and then. If you don’t address these stains right away, they will accumulate resulting in stubborn stains sticking to concrete permanently. Dirt and stains do tend to stick on concrete especially on outdoors where it’s exposed to pollution. Over time they can look shabby and grimy. For example, if your stipple finish concrete patio is looking grubby, and you want to transform it again from what it used to look like while it was new, then it’s time to clean your concrete.

The process of doing this will depend on what type of stains or smudges you’ll be cleaning. Don’t fret though, as this article will guide you on how to wash and clean your concrete and make it look brand new.

But before we delve into the process, let us first look at the causes why concrete stains:

Why Does Concrete Stain?

Concrete consists of natural materials: water, sand, gravel and cement. Because of its materials, it’s porous which means it absorbs anything that comes in contact with its surface. So, for example, if mud splashes on concrete or charcoal stains cover the concrete, it absorbs all these elements especially if you don’t clean up the mess and let it sit there for a while.

When accidents like this occur, it’s best to soak up the mess or sweep it off right away to avoid the stain and dirt from sticking to the concrete. This tip is for concrete that is newly installed or newly washed. This won’t be the case for stains and dirt that have been stuck there over time.

Steps for Cleaning Concrete

Removing Dirt Stains and Debris

Sweep or vacuum loose dirt off the surface of your concrete. If you are cleaning concrete driveways and paths, remove and treat any weeds that may have infiltrated cracks.

One of the most budget-friendly ways to spot-treat stains is with liquid laundry detergent and water. Target the area by pouring the soap directly onto the stain and then use a stiff nylon brush to scrub the area. After scrubbing, rinse the area with water and allow it to dry.

If the stain doesn’t disappear, boost your cleaning solution with a mixture of white vinegar/baking soda and water and pour it on the stain again and brush it and then rinse it well with a bucket of water or garden hose. If the stain is the most stubborn thing in the universe and it persists, try a pressure washer. Don’t forget to wear safety goggles and protect windows and plants as the water pressure can damage them.

Removing Oil and Grease Stains

Grease from your car, lawnmower, grill, and food can cause tricky concrete stains. As always with a concrete stain, immediately try to blot it up with a paper towel. If the stain persists or you’re dealing with an older stain, apply laundry detergent to the stain. If you are using dry detergent, add water to make it into a paste. Make sure to cover the entire area. Cover the detergent with plastic wrap and secure it with tape. This prevents water from washing the detergent away. Let the detergent sit overnight. The next morning, scrub it with a soft brush and rinse it with water.

Removing Rust Stains

Rust stain occurs when it comes in contact with metal (particularly iron metal) that has already rusted. Whether it’s caused by a forgotten tool exposed to the elements or iron patio furniture, rust stains on concrete are relatively common. You can remove them with little to no effort. A newer stain may only require the use of a common acid like lemon juice or vinegar. Pour juice or vinegar on the stain, let it sit, scrub, rinse and repeat if necessary. For tougher rust stains, you may need a commercial rust remover. To remove a rust stain using a commercial product, read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow the recommendations for application.
